Tampa Sister Cities Honors National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Winner

George Martinez, Director of the Tampa-Barranquilla Sister Cities Committee presented Dr. Adriana Ocampo a proclamation signed by the mayor of Barranquilla making her an honorary citizen on October 22, 2016.

Dr. Adriana Ocampo is one of the world’s leading experts in space exploration and a planetary geologist. She was born in Barranquilla, Colombia Tampa’s sister city.

Dr. Ocampo was first to identify, using satellite images, the asteroid impact that likely caused the extinction event that wiped our dinosaurs. She is the leader of NASA’s New Frontiers effort, including New Horizons mission to Pluto and Juno mission to Jupiter, and is NASA’s lead scientist for the exploration of planet Venus.
The Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) named Dr. Adriana Ocampo the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year October 22, 2016.
