Mayor Buckhorn Reaffirms Sister City Relationship Between Tampa and Barranquilla During Florida-Colombia Trade Mission

Tampa, FL — As part of Governor Rick Scott’s Florida-Colombia Trade Mission, a delegation of Tampa business leaders, representatives from USF World, Port Tampa Bay, US Commercial Services, and Tampa-Barranquilla Sister Cities Committee Chairman George Martinez, traveled to Colombia to strengthen economic and cultural ties.

On December 6, 2012, the Tampa delegation took a special detour to visit Tampa’s Sister City, Barranquilla. In a symbolic moment, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Barranquilla Mayor Elsa Noguera de la Espriella signed a reaffirmation agreement to continue the longstanding relationship between the two cities. This reaffirmation marks a new chapter in the 46-year partnership, which began in 1966 when then-Mayors Nick Nuccio of Tampa and Saul Pertuz Jimeno of Barranquilla first established the Sister City relationship.

Mayor Buckhorn emphasized the importance of continuing Tampa’s commitment to international collaboration, noting, “Barranquilla and Tampa have shared a rich history of cultural and economic exchange, and this reaffirmation highlights our commitment to building a future of even greater cooperation.”

The visit was part of a larger mission to strengthen ties between Florida and Colombia, which has been one of the state’s top trade partners. The Tampa delegation’s visit to Barranquilla reinforced the importance of mutual growth in business, education, and cultural exchanges between the two Sister Cities.
