Tampa Sister Cities – Barranquilla Medallion Recipient | National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Honoree

On October 23, 2016, Dr. Adriana Ocampo, an accomplished planetary geologist and space scientist, was honored at the National Hispanic Scientist of the Year Awards at the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) in Tampa, Florida. The celebration recognized her groundbreaking work with NASA and her inspiring role as a trailblazer for women and Hispanics in STEM.

Special Honors from Tampa and Barranquilla

In a ceremony attended by dignitaries, community leaders, and aspiring young scientists, Tampa Sister Cities Director George Martinez presented Dr. Ocampo with the Tampa-Barranquilla Sister Cities Medallion—a symbol of friendship and cultural connection between the two cities. In addition to the medallion, she received an official Proclamation from the City of Tampa, commemorating her extraordinary achievements and international impact.

These recognitions underscore Dr. Ocampo’s roots in Barranquilla, Colombia, and her enduring contributions to science, diplomacy, and educational outreach, making her a global ambassador of innovation and cultural unity.
